NYC Great Debaters Weekly!

The Martin Luther King Jr. &

Coretta Scott King Debates

Dear Friend,

This month we celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. & Coretta Scott King Debates. MLK was one of the world's greatest public speakers and civil rights leaders ... and he was also on his school's debate team! Both MLK and Coretta Scott King used the power of public speaking to change the world. And so each weekend this month we dedicate a debate to the Kings. This weekend is our MLK Middle School Tournament in two locations! On MLK Day we are hosting a special MLK Day Debate and Workshop for new debaters. Next weekend is our MLK High School Tournament. And the last weekend of January is our Coretta Scott King Girls Debate League Tournament. Altogether, over 1000 students, volunteers, parents and teachers will come together this month in debates dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.

Now more than ever we need to remember MLK's vision of the "Beloved Community." In a time filled where some of our nation's leaders including the President of the United States use words (and profanity and vulgarity) to promote racism, sexism, xenophobia, bigotry, hate and bullying - and just as worst - those that remain silent, complacent or supportive when such words are used... we need to remember MLK now more than ever. And so this month we celebrate MLK and all our debaters this month who will use the power of speech to do good. Debate teaches positive communication skills - not profanity and vulgarity. Debate teaches respect of opinions and perspectives - not bullying, silencing, or censoring. Debate teaches respect - not hatred or agression. Debate teaches evidence based argumentation - not stereotypes and twitter tirades. Debate teaches knowledge and awareness of the world - not ignorance, racism, sexism, xenopohobia, homophobia, and bigotry. "The Time is always right to do what is right." - MLK. "It doesn't matter how Strong your Opinions are. If you don't use your POWER for POSITIVE Change, you are, indeed, part of the problem." - Coretta Scott King

Sincerely, Erik Fogel,
