“Those 4 years in debate were the educational foundation of everything I did. And I don’t mean that in some simple form…I’m saying the finest education I got from any of the institutions I attended, the foundation of my mind that I got during those 4 years of competitive policy debate; that is, 90% of the intellectual capacity that I operate with today–Fordham [University] for college, Fordham for the Ph.D., Harvard for law school–all of that is the other 10%.” – John Sexton, President of New York University, Former NYC Debate Coach of 10 years

And the following weekend a huge congratulations to Brooklyn Tech who debated at the Georgetown Day School Tournament in Washington DC. Tech BP (Barry and Puccio) reached elimination rounds with a 6-1 record and won their octofinals and quarterfinals round to reach semifinals at the time this article was written. And Tech MW (Meyer-Starr and Weiner) were 5-2, reached elimination rounds and won octofinals and reached quarterfinals.  Kadiatou Barry won 5th place overall best speaker award.
Why is this important? There should be no glass ceiling on our youth. The mission of the travel team is that our students should have the opportunity to compete in the most competitive and prestigious tournaments in the nation.  And our Great Debaters not only participate but often win! And even if one loses every debate round - its an accomplishment in itself to compete against the most elite programs in the nation and the world, which will only increase your own academic and debate skills.
