Harlem Globetrotters invites our families, students, teachers to their Game on November 25th! Daily News features MS 50 Debate Team! October 2018 Highlights & Record 5 Tournaments in 2 Weeks!

5 Tournaments in 2 weeks! What a record!  Thank you to over 1000+ debaters, volunteers, parents, staff, alumni and supporters of debate over the past two weeks that participated in our High School Public Forum Debate Tournament (@ Beacon High School), High School Policy Debate Tournament (@ Leon Goldstein HS), Girls Round Robin (NYCUDL Office), MSQI Debate Tournament #1 (@ Stuyvesant HS), Girls Workshop & Tournament (@ NYCUDL Office 2).. and we also hosted a Beginners Workshop (Beacon HS)! September 2018 Highlights!  NYC Debaters Meet President Clinton, Actor Alec Baldwin, Hip Hop Artist Common, Dr. Ruth and More!

NYCUDL high school teams won big in Washington D.C. at the Georgetown Day Tournament and qualified for the Tournament of Champions! We hosted our first Middle School Tournament of the Year! 31 Schools, 229 Students, 135 Volunteers, Parents, and Staff. Oh yeah, and our debaters and coaches had the opportunity to meet with President Clinton, Hip Hop Artist Common, Actor Alec Baldwin, Dr. Ruth, Journalist and Morning Show Host, Gayle King, cast members from Orange is the New Black, sports stars and more. President Clinton expressed awe at our debaters' knowledge of US immigration policies. Alec Baldwin was so impressed by our Great Debaters... he may be coming to a Tournament soon!

We ended August with six weeks of summer debate institutes and summer tournaments serving over 200 students and over 100 volunteers, teachers, staff, interns, parents and Summer Leaders. July 2018 Highlights: 3 Weeks of Girls Debate Camp!

The NYCUDL started the first Girls Debate League in the nation with year round tournaments, workshops, Round Robin Invitationals, Summer Camps, and More! Click here to learn more! And another amazing summer in partnership with the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (BALI) to provide debate education programs to an incredible group of middle school, high school and college young women. For the first year ever, we partnered to provide not one but two different all girls summer debate institutes!  Click here for Camp Photos!

April 2018 Highlights: 

Middle School State Champs! High School State Champs! National Urban Debate Champs! National Debate Coaches Champs! Tournament of Champions!

This month we shout out our Champions! Rajendara Singh and Julio Cordero of Law, Leadership & Public Service went UNDEFEATED (6-0) in preliminary rounds at the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky - one of the nation's most prestigious debate tournaments. Rosalisy Peguero and Namerlyn Rosario of Dr. Richard Izquerido Health and Science Charter School ended as Octafinalists (14th seed overall) of the 2018 Urban Debate National Championship at Georgetown University.  At the same time two NYCUDL teams represented NYC at the National Debate Coaches National Championships. March 2018 Highlights:  NYCUDL Alumni, Geordano Liriano Becomes #1 Debate Champion in the Nation!

Congratulations to NYCUDL Alumni, Geordano Liriano (Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice) of the University of Iowa who went UNDEFEATED at the CEDA National Debate Championships. Click here for complete article!

February 2018 Highlights: Our Debaters Dominate at Harvard University AND University of Pennsylvania!

What a month! NYCUDL Travel Teams swept the two largest, most competitive and most prestigious tournaments on the East Coast - the Harvard Tournament (Over 30 Awards including 1st Place) and the Westchester Classic (Over 60 Awards, THREE FIRST PLACES!, THREE SECOND PLACES, SIX THIRD PLACES!) Click to learn more!  Meanwhile, back on our own home turf, we hosted our monthly Middle School and High School Tournaments. At NYC High School Tournament#5 (2/3/18), 37 schools, 204 students, 93 volunteers, teachers and guests participated! And at MSQI Debate Tournament #2, 36 schools, 479 students, 220 judges and volunteers, 243 debate teams.  So a grand total of 73 schools and 683 students participated in debates this weekend thanks to over 313 volunteers, staff, teachers and guests!

January 2018 Highlights: Trevor Noah Debate Trip!

 In January we celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. & Coretta Scott King Debates. Altogether, over 1000 students, volunteers, parents and teachers came together in debates dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. We also hosted the Coolidge Cup Qualifier. The top two teams and top two speakers were awarded a 5 day scholarship for travel, housing, and meals to compete for $10,000 in awards at the Coolidge Cup in Vermont. Thank you to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation for sponsoring this tournament and the incredible scholarships to our top winners. And in New Jersey at the Newark Invitational Tournament, NYCUDL debaters won more awards than any other program! We ended the month with one of our Debate Field Trips to the Daily Show! Each year Trevor Noah invites over 60 of our coaches, staff and alumni.  Finally, we hosted our Winter Debate Con for NYC debate educators!
