Dear Friend,

This week we shout out the beginning of the debate season with NYC Middle School Debate Tournament #1 kicking off in two different locations on Saturday October 7th - Brooklyn and Manhattan and already over 100 teams signed up! Wow!  And what an incredible diversity of five different topics from North Korea proliferation to youth competitive sports....

  • Resolved: Deployment of anti-missile systems is in South Korea’s best interest.
  • This House would make hate speech illegal.
  • This House would require immigrants to learn English.
  • This House believes youth competitive sports do more harm than good.
  • Resolved: Humans are fundamentally different from other animals.

And two weekends later our High School Tournament #1 kicks off with two topics:

Public Forum Debate
Resolved: Deployment of anti-missile systems is in South Korea’s best interest.

Policy Debate
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States.

"I am Debate!" Girls Debate League Kick Off Event!

Saturday, September 16, 2017 was the launch of the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL) inaugural Girls Debate League workshop series. The first workshop, hosted at New York University Steinhardt School, focused on Debate & Identity. The participants were a collective of New York City elementary through high school aged girls, who came together because of their differences, embracing their age, race, ethnicity, and gender for the sake of debate. This workshop represented the forming of a community in which they could openly and safely discuss what drives them in debate rounds...

Girls Debate League

In preparation for our next Girls Debate League Workshop (tentatively on November 4th) we seek your insights and expertise. The Girls Debate League understands that gender inequality continues to exist and thrives at different levels of society. Therefore, we utilize debate as a vehicle to actively acknowledge injustices and create a safe space for individuals who identify as female to challenge the status quo.

Come join us in planning and designing a workshop that will impact the lives of our girl debaters. Your skills and knowledge as a coach, debater, mother, alumni, lawyer, or volunteer can make a difference!
