What a historical weekend for the debate community! This weekend Wiley College (home of the Great Debaters) hosted the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Speech & Debate National Championships... and Denzel Washington who played the role of legendary Wiley College Debate Coach, Melvin Tolson in the Movie "The Great Debaters" will be presenting at the awards ceremony! And here in NYC we hosted the first all girls debate tournament of 2018.  The NYCUDL founded the first girls debate league in the nation and each year is expanding with more workshops, tournaments and debaters! Click to learn more. 

 

This Saturday (2/3) we celebrate President's Day (many who were former debaters!) with the NYCUDL's Coolidge Cup Qualifier Tournament (NYCUDL High School Tournament #5)! Thank you to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation for its incredible support. 

 

• Top two Varsity Public Forum Debate Teams and Top two Varsity Spearwill will qualify to the Coolidge Tournament and receive scholarships paying for travel, housing, meals for 5 days to compete at the Coolidge Cup in Vermont! 

 

• $10,000 will be awarded to the top finishers of the Coolidge Cup

 

• 1st Place Winner of the Coolidge Cup will be awarded the Robert L. Luddy-Coolidge Cup Award of $7,500

 

• All High School Juniors invited to apply to the Coolidge Scholarship which pays all expenses (tuition, housing, meals, etc) to any college in the United States.

On February 3rd, we host NYC High School Debate Tournament #5: The Coolidge Cup Qualifier at Bronx Collaborative High School, Worldview High School and Clinton High School. The top two winning teams and top two speakers in Open/Varsity Public Forum Debate will qualify for the Coolidge Cup and will be awarded a 5 day scholarship (July 1st-July 5th) for travel, housing, and meals to compete for $10,000 in awards at the Coolidge Cup in Vermont. Thank you to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation for sponsoring this tournament and the incredible scholarships to our top winners.

In February we celebrate African American History Month with New York City's first Harlem Debate Tournament.  Sponsored by the West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC), the Columbia University Debate Society, and the Winners of the Columbia University High School Debate Invitational Tournament.  The Harlem Debates will be hosted by PS 180 Hugo Newman School and Hamilton Grange Middle School! Thank you to everyone attending our first girls debate tournament of the year at the Young Women's Leadership School of Queens this weekend (1/27/18). Over 100 students, volunteers, parents and coaches joined us for an all girls debate tournament on topics including the statute of limitations on sexual assault, education reform, and the national public forum debate resolution on Catalonia independence. Debate events featured public forum debate, parliamentary debate, and policy debate. The New York City Urban Debate League hosts “DEBATE CON” several times a year on the Chancellor’s Professional Development Days. DEBATE CON is the city’s education conference bringing together debate educators, coaches and teachers. The event is free for all debate educators. The purpose of the conference is to help debate educators grow and learn from one another, share best practices, as well as build collegiality in the NYC and greater debate community. We will have tracks for all levels of debate.

Do not have a debate team at your school? Join the NYC Debate Club! We meet on Saturdays at our Office (25 Broadway, 9th Floor) for drop in debate practices for 5th – 12th grade students.  All students participating in Debate Club are eligible to participate in tournaments. Virtual resources are available if you are not able to attend all practice sessions.
